Whenever I watch shows featuring hosts like Larry King, David Letterman, Jay Leno, etc., they ALWAYS have a coffee mug on their desk. You never see them take a sip of coffee during the actual show. (Maybe they sip during commercial breaks.)

It's almost as if they put special EMPHASIS on the fact that there's a coffee mug on the desk. Why is that? Why would the TV viewer care whether or not the person is drinking coffee?

the presence of the coffee cup makes interview process seem more casual and i like to believe that it's not coffee.

Hate to break it to you, but it's not coffee in those mugs. Some hosts simply do drink water - after all, they're talking the whole time, and your throat gets dry, but they can't just pull out a bottle of water with a label on it! Plus, lots of late-night type guests, specify that they want a certain alcohol, or something else, all of which is usually worked out prior to the guest coming on the show.

Because the coffee mugs are for sale in the NBC, ABC, etc. stores and they can make money. It's just a promo thing.

Because its free advertising i'm sure of what type of coffee they are drinking. And advertising of what is on the mug itself.
