well....if you really want to charter a boat in order to do what you wanna do...here is the the link: http://www.yachtcancun.com
is it worth it? absolutely not.but hey...it's your money.i sold my boat two month ago through yachtcancun and they are honest and reliable.tell "eric" that "olaf",the owner of the "carpe diem" send you and go from there....he may give u a discount...who knows.a 28 to 32 footer for example goes for 250-350U$ per hour.in order to go from cancun to cozumel with a boat that size i would call it an "adventure-fee".depending on season (ocean condition) u will need at least 8 hours roundtrip incl stop at cozumel (cancun-cozumel-cancun).BUT:10-12 pax on a let's say 30 foot boat? yeah right.no way jose.that little excursion will cost you on a right sized boat (they only have one which holds 12 pax and that goes for 450U$ per hour) incl capitan and so on at least 3600 to 4000 U$.
if you take the bus to playa del carmen and the public ferry from there to cozumel it will cost you approx 350 U$ for the 10-12 of you.(incl.moon palace-playa del carmen-cozumel-palace cozumel-back to the ferry-playa-moon palace).
somewhat 3600U$ just to visit the palace on cozumel?????oh my g...!!!
please excuse my spelling....i'm german.
if you are serious about all that....send me a message.
i do live in the area since a long, long time.
greetings from playa,
cancundivers

edit:like jim w says....take the ferry from playa.the ticket roundtrip cost 22U$ per person.(unfortunetly 12U$ times are over,lol)

Unless you've rented a Cigarette boat (or for 10 people, 3 of them) the trip from Cancun will take about 3 1/2 hours, and that's when travelling fast in the calmest of seas. When you get there, you'll be crispy if it's sunny out and/or beat to death from the chop on the water if it's an overcast day which usually brings ocean wind (not the most fun of trips). It also means you'll have just enough time to have lunch and turn right around to go back to Cancun unless you've arranged overnight accommodations for your guests and for the boat on Cozumel.

If you don't plan on getting rooms/berthing for everyone on Cozumel and you actually want to have time (and the energy) to see something when you get to Cozumel (highly advised) - make reservations with any of the bus tours take you at least as far south as Playa Del Carmen and take the ferry from there. And there are other options (lots of them) - but boating it from Cancun to Cozumel can only be advised for those that have a significant budget and are not particularly risk averse (given how the weather might affect your plans).

Why not do it like everyone else? Bus it down to Playa del C. & take a 'WATER TAXI". They probably only charge 12 bucks or so for the 35 min ride. You can get drinks on board too.
