i dont think its normal but i would try and stop it happening because he could get injured and break some of his bones. Try and get him a different cage that he cant get to the top of if you cant stop him doing it because i dont think its very good for him.

Normal? No. But they are always moving and foraging in nature. They wont be stymied by a ledge. They are not built to climb down so in nature they will dig tunnels and go up and down these tunnels.
One pet hamster of our friend's son was left by the son in a third story veranda in their apartment. Next thing we heard was a yelp by the son that his hamster decided to explore past the metal siding and it went over.
We all spent hours searching the grounds where it fell. We never found it. If it died , we would have found it, so it must have lived and hid from everyone, or a predator came and made it a meal.
Keep an eye out for your hamster and keep it safe.

My hamster lives in a massive 3 storey cage and i used to keep it on top of a unit. I went on hols at new year for 10 days and when i came home my haster was gone. He fell from nearly 6 feet! we eventually found him happy as larry in the kitchen, the only damage done was that he was very thirsty!! to this day i curse myself for putting his cage so high and can not believe he came out of it alive without a scratch on him. Hamsters have very poor eye sight and will jump from any height without realising the dangers, although Harry had a lucky escape hamsters can very easily break their little feet or legs so be careful.

Is the hamster out of its cage when he falls? If so keep it in the cage... and if its not that far from the top to the bottom of the cage then i wouldnt worry about it!... He's probably just keeping himself busy, in a weird way =) i hope this helps!!

We have had a few hamsters....even had a few babies when the pet store sold us 2 of the same sex (yeah RIGHT). But every single one of them seemed to like to climb on the top of the cage...and every single one of them fell from time to time...as long as your cage isn't very tall...and most aren't so they DON'T get hurt...then your hamster should be just fine.
Our one female hamster would climb up on the top when she wanted out and wanted attention. You might try taking your hamster out and holding them a little more and see if that helps the behavior.

Inside their cage yes as they have poor eyesight,if they land on sawdust or other bedding they will be fine.

For this reason though when they are out of the cage keep them away from high surfaces and if your holding it do so with cupped hands so it can't fall and hurt itself.

Hi, Well our hamster does this several times a day, she is always dangling upside down on the bar's of her cage, and she has so many things to keep her amused but she still does this.

Hamsters (no p) have very bad eye-sight at close range and cannot see depth. So, yes, it's 'normal' that it happens, but you should prevent it, because you don't want them to break anything! When playing with a hamster, always be close to the ground and never let it play on a high surface.
