I experienced a very similar situation and it took over a year, but we were able to gain back our friendship. I actually avoided him for most of the year because it was just so awkward. Then one day somebody did something that reminded us of an inside joke we had and our friendship clicked back into place. I suggest space and time. I can empathize with you because it was very difficult to lose a close friend even for a short while. I hope everything works out!

You should stop this as soon as possible. It depends on fact whether he meant it really seriously or not. If you are very close friends and you've shared a lot, it is certain that you have developed certain emotional addiction to each other. It's just a product of the closeness. Convince him to decide soberly this way what he says and determinates to do and try to tutor him of the possible friendship end. If you allowed you two to commit the relationship you would barely be able to undo this step - at least from his side.

Nope ..usually when one of thepeople in a friendship falls in love with the other and the other rejects that person, The friendship usually dies. The other can't handle being around you when he loves you but can't have you. You rejected him and now he feels like you rejected him as a friend as well. Like he's not good enough for you . He may leave you on his own and not talk to you again..for it may be too much for him to take just by simply being around you.
If you care for him as a friend you'll let him go. Give him space and time to heal .
Actually being friends with you would hurt him more in the long run. The closer he gets to you, the more of a shot he will think he has of changing your mind so that you will love him.
I know I went through the same thing with a friend of mine and she rejected me...I felt so worhtless. I haven't spoken to her in 2 + years
I have been what this dude is going through !!!!!

yes of course. if he loves you it may hurt him that you only want to be friends. but being friends is better than him loosing you all together. so be honest about how you feel. dont hint or beat around the bush. thats kid sh*t. and dont assume he knows what you're saying. make sure you're clear. he deserves that at least.
after a while the friendship will most likely go back to the way it was. if not, you weren't meant to be in each other's lives, as friends or anything else. go with the flow.

If this guy told you this recently dont worry about it it'll all stop being awkward soon. If its been a while just make it clear that nothing will ever happen (if you are infact sure nothing will) and then tell him he might try finding someone else. Dont be too hard but me firm. Dont lead him on in any way (flirting unconciously). I know this cause a guy feels this way about me. If he still wants to be your friend he'll act normal. Dont sweat over it.

no chance! Once someone has decided that they have feelings for someone else it is impossible to eradicate those feelings! It is already lost once you turn from friends to something else the path you walked so comfortably together is now closed! It sounds harsh bel;ieve me I was the guy!!!! Doesn't work!
