I live in Texas, so I can't just leave it open to fend for itself. From what I've read, flies and crickets are too big and ants are poisonous. Any other suggestions?

You don't NEED to feed it anything. It will get its nutrition from its roots and leaves just like any other plant. The traps collect occasional insect protien as a diet supplement.

If you like to watch the traps operate, freshly squashed bugs are best. Lacking that, I've used tiny balls of liverwurst. Just drop it in the trap and jiggle the hairs along the inside of the trap. They're the triggers that signal the trap to close. Use a toothpick, gently.

How you feed it is maybe more important than what you feed it. Make sure whatever you put in there will allow the trap to seal completely along its entire outer edge. Any opening will allow the digestive enzymes to leak out and attack the unprotected outer surfaces. This will kill the trap and its leaf.

They're fairly short-lived so don't be too disappointed when it croaks anyway.

i would go for flies. definately dont feed it sausage. i had one once, and my dad was like, "oh! feed it some sausage!" and i was like, "r u sure thats a good idea?" and my dad was like, "yes"....two days later it was dead..... :'(

flies are what it would normally eat in the wild....if you think theyd be too big, then try cutting it in half....

flies, never give them hamburger meat or any other red meat. That can harm the plant.
