Every 24 hours or so a timer brings on an element which quickly melts off any excess ice, without raising the temperature in the cabinet. This water drains to the outside and evaporates. Also the circulating air in the cabinet passes through a drier which removes moisture, and reduces icing.

There is a small electric heater in the fridge that melts the ice and prevents frost- who would have thought theres a heater in your refrigerator!
