The two big things when trying to draw a character accuatly are volumes and proportions.
Start with a full rotation of your character front view, 3/4 front view, side view, 3/4 back view, and full back view. Draw the front or 3/4 front first, then useing a rular draw horizontal lines across your page at the top of the head, bottom of the head, shoulders etc... as many lines as you need to get all of the heights the same. http://arania.kamiki.net/Ambrose/Bernice%20Ambrose%20Character%20Rotation.jpg Here's an example of part of a rotation.
Once you have this done, you have several views of the same character so you can refer to these when drawing.
Make sure to be very concious of your proportions when drawing the character. Also make sure to pay attention to the details of the character, shape of the eyes, jewlery, hairstyle.
If your drawing the character on two pieces of paper at about the same size put the finished picture under the one your drawing and put them against the window. this way you have a clear view of both drawings and you can see where your volumes and proportions differ.
