Patriotism is self-indulgent nonsense.
There is no LOGICAL, MORAL or PHILOSOPHICAL justification for it. Fact!
It is merely something that the leaders of a country use to send the "cannon-fodder" galloping to there own unsighted doom.
I can relate to what Social Science Lady, below says. But "we", the British invented concentration camps. We called them "internment camps" and we used them, I think in Kenya. The Turks (against the Armenians) and the Germans (WWII) were impressed by this Great British invention and adopted the idea for themselves. I'm simply not prepared to be proud of that, or Bloody Sunday, or the Peterloo Massacre or countless other British contributions to human suffering. Some people can see the swings, but not the roundabouts.
Living in the real world is all about having a balanced view. After all, it was the Nazi's who chose to accept certain realities, but not the ones that didn't fit their blinkered view.
Patriotism is simply a form of burying your head in the sand.

I am proud of my fellow countrymen and I am proud to be British.Putt Nelson and Wellington aside, the real British heroes were the men who held there ground at Waterloo or stood to there guns at Trafalgar and the "ordinary" men and women who fought the Nazis to a standstill. I am proud of my country for seeing the evil in slavery and fighting to abolish it and the artisans and workers who toiled on usually for little reward and made the industrial revolution work taking this world further down the road to civilisation than any other nation.

I am proud of my country for having men that were capable of building such magnificent buildings that have stood for centuries, for the men who built our parliamentary system and the Magna Carta. I am proud to come from the same `stock` as the men and women who fought in the second world war, on both the front line and the home front, who lived through such tedious years, I am very proud to be English.

Some right-wing propagandists would say I am unpatriotic and do not "support our troops" by being against our current administration and it's wars and policies. However, I very much support our troops and I love the USA...freedom of speech, the whole Bill of Rights. This is the greatest country in the world...we use to fight for others' freedoms but now we fight over or own greed or for vengeance. "Vengeance is MINE" saith the Lord.

I am very proud to be part of a country (Britain) that has such a fantastic and colourful history. There are some things that I am not so proud of that our ancients did, but its what has made us great.

This is generally a thing that unpatriotic people do, but...
I am English, and I am proud to have the freedom to burn my flag if I so wish.
Not that I do. But it's nice to know that I can and not get put in prison.
