How does the Lost Cities game draw pile work?

in the game Lost Cities, the rules say that the game ends when one of the players draws the last card from the draw pile, but then it says that you can count points that are left in the draw pile. How can you look at points left in the draw pile if one of the players just took the last card???

What it means is that you can always look to see how many cards are left before the game ends.

This is BEFORE the last card is drawn.

The way we play, when we make the draw pile, we take the last 10 cards and turn them 90 degrees. Then we take the last 5 cards and turn them back. (So now cards, 6,7,8,9,10 from the bottom stick out because they are turned sideways) So then we can see where the rotated cards are left in the deck and we know that is when there are only 10 cards left. Then when the cards in the deck turn back to normal, there are only 5 cards left. But at any time either player can count exactly how many are left.

It's just like a time remaining clock in sports. Both players can check to see how many turns are left in the game, and you can use that to judge if you need to make the game last longer by picked up discards instead of drawing off the draw pile.

Okay, I see the misunderstanding. The second sentence after Game end and scoring says, "Players are allowed to count the cards remaining in the draw pile to better their plans." It means during the game players may count the cards in the draw pile to judge how close the end of the hand is. It is an odd place to put that sentence. Lost Cities is a great game.
