Mercedes has been a pioneer in safety and engineering. I own a 1991 500 S class coupe (500SEC) It came with dual airbags, automatically tension adjusting seatbelts, dual zone climate control, ASR and traction control. How many 1991 cars do you know that had that stuff?

Also the way that the car is put together can be a real nightmare for mechanics who are not familuar with their thought process. But for the user it means durability and quiet ride.
MB, like all car manufacturers, have had their ups and downs. I have known MB fans who got disappointed and changed to another brand, but they all come back to the star.
If MB is not a durable dependable car then why is it the #1 car for taxis in most of Europe and the middle east?

I forgot on the last few years of the S class these safety features:
Radar (controlled) cruise control
Presafe-adjusts seats, belts, steerwheel and preignites airbags milliseconds before impact
The SL series when they introduced the automatic flip up roll bar in the convertables
The SLK with the folding hard top convertable (yes there were others before as far back as the 50's, but they perfected it where other are now making copies)

Mercedes-Benz has these accolades to their credit. The invented the combustion motor car. While Ford was the first American motor car manufacturer, Mercedes was the first in the world. The also invented the following things. Airbags, Traction control, anti-lock brakes, crumple zones, and many more things that I can not even fit on this page.

Their special features include ridiculously expensive repairs. A woman I know drives $150,00 Benz and the thing is in the shop constantly.... should have stuck with her Lexus.
