I have a Toyota and a Lexus, both of which are at risk for some kind of oil sludge condition. They are pushing 90,000 miles. Before I put more maintenance money into them, like a new timing belt, where can I go to have the oil tested to see if the cars are at risk for this or other problems?

Any test is a waste of money. Change your oil and take the old oil and look at it and see if it is clean or a sludge type material is present. If it is clean and no metalic sludge present then do the repairs.90,000 miles on a toyota is nothing....I have over 800,000 on a chevy truck and its still going. Key is to drive it normally and change the oil often. Oils have detergents in them to clean the motor but when not changed the detergent cant do anymore....ever wash clothes in dirty water?

Why are they at risk of oil sludge cond? never heard that explain more. 90,000 should be nothing for those Toyota's, I have had 200,000 with no problems. The oil/engine is just one part, have a mechanic check the whole car out.

Go to NAPA and buy oil analysis kit and follow instructions you won't get a true reading off of the first sample they will use that as a base for further samples.

you sound like a buddy of mine always sweating the small stuff and this is what i told him.
IF YOUR WORRIED ABOUT IT GO GET A NEW CAR ,,,,,end of problem..
I've driven old cars my whole life and if they work good ,,don't leak or burn a lot of oil don't worry about it.
you either make car payments every month of repairs 2 or 3 times a year.
