I don't think there's any specific order to read his books with the exception of "Wicked" and "Son of a Witch" (newer book that follows Elphaba's son).
He also wrote:
1. Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister (Cinderella)
2. Mirror, Mirror (Snow White)
3. Lost (Jack the Ripper)
I read Wicked and really enjoyed it. I have Confessions and Mirror on my reading list.

Well, you're on a good start, Wicked is the best to start with, seeing as it is the first novel and Son of a Witch wouldn't make as much sense without reading Wicked first, thought it would probably still be a great book. (I haven't read Son of a Witch yet!) I'm not sure on there being a series, but Son of a Witch defiantly should go next.

After finishing Wicked, you have to read Son of a Witch. Just as great as Wicked. It is about Liir to show what happens after the death of Elphaba.
Its not really a "sequel", so it wouldn't matter too much if you read that before Wicked, but it would make much more sense.
There is a third book that links to these two, A Cowardly War, that has yet to come out, but I cannot wait! It, as you may have guessed, features the Cowardly Lion.

I have read all of Maguire's books and except for Wicked and Son of a Witch the others are stand alone. All very good books, imo, and I can tell you that I love reading the flip side of these people's lives and what they were thinking and what led them to be the way that they are! Enjoy!

As for the musical it truly is loosely depending on the e book, the e book is quite distinct (isn't..sigh..)
