i'm so addicted to myspace, cell phone, ipod, blackberry, computer, name brands, cameras etc.

i don't want to join a monestary or move to a deserted island or anything extreme i just want to be a modern girl in a modern world who can live without modern things.

I would suggest that you simply be more aware of others. Try volunteering somewhere and you will soon see how fortunate you are. This willl (hopefully) also motivate you to help others. Perhaps your friends will catch on, too, and you will end up having a huge impact.

I commend you for trying. Good luck!

Look, baby...

The fact that you're self aware enough to admit this means you're OK...

You just keep right on prefering quality goods....

There's nothing wrong with that. LIghten up. You can be materialistic and still be a good person.

Start by reading "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand or something...

i was the same way.. until i got into Buddhism. .. this is one of the things they teach. Here is a good book that got me started ..
It has made me a much happier person. People quickly forget what life is about .. and being aware of how fortunate you are compaired to many around the world who are suffering .. is a true discovery.

"It's not what you gather, but what you scatter that shows the kind of life you're led."
It's not the newest, latest, most powerful of anythig that you own that is going to determine your long-term happiness. Try giving your life some perspective. Look beyond yourself and your wants to the world around you. (We don't even have to talk globally here, there's plenty close to home to examine.)

I think this is what the ancient practice of fasting is all about. Set aside some time where you do not use those things for a season. The point is to get control and not let your emotions or desires control you.
You can do it! :)
