Both use the exactly the same connector, but USB 2 is a faster link

USB 2.0 (400MBps) is faster than 1.1 (110MBps), and 2.0 is backward compatible with 1.1. So yes, 1.1 will work in a 2.0 USB port. If you use a 1.1 USN hub it will slow down data transfer for 2.0 devices. Data will only transfer as fast as the slowest configuration.

Only major difference is the transfer speed.
Yes you can plug a USB 1 stick into a USB 2 hub.
USB is very backward compatable.

ONE WORD:

Speed.

They connect the same. You can use a 1.1 hub in a 2.0 bus, but it will run at 1.1 speed. 2.0 is 80x faster.

Cheers :-)

Having tried both on different items, i would recommend USB 2.0, fast, better and much easier to use, good luck.
