The US is selecting a new design to modernize its nuclear weapons, according to the NY Times, and it refers to the design as a hybrid, a cross between the two weapons labs' approaches. What's tthe difference between this design and the older design, and what makes it more reliable, more secure, etc?

The details about nuclear weapons design is classified so we have not been nor will we be told the difference. The only thing we know is that one uses more theoretical computer generated models and the other depends more on data from underground test.
