Tactics is the heart of chess, even at the master level. Daily practice of tactical exercises, combined with weekly over-the-board play against opponents slightly better than yourself is a proven formula for improvement.
Knowledge of the theory of openings, endgames, and middle games stratgies are also important to reach master level, but are always subsumed by tactical considerations.

"can you get extremely good just through practice"
You have to play alot against very strong human opponents who aren't easy to beat and will push you to work hard every single game that's the way you get good
Studying: this means hitting the books and learning how to play Chess properly the right way and not the stinky way people on yahoo or the ones in the park play you won't last 5 minutes with a real Fide Master if you play 1.e4 e5 2.Qf3 or openings like 1.e4 e5 2.Qh5 or play crappy undisciplined Chess where development is neglected and you play with no plan.
-Studying Master Games of Alekhine Fischer, Tal, Botvinnik
and Capablanca.
-Studying Your own Games with a strong player especially
your losses and learning from your mistakes
-Study theory and endgame
Study Tactics do 400-600 problems a day some do 1000
problems.
I'd saying having good nerves and psychology is important
too because tournament chess is very very stressful.

You must study theory or you will not know how to win in the endgame and you will be at a disadvantage in the opening. But most people also need to practice against very good players - or perhaps the best computer programs nowadays. Chess is also a psychological game at tournament level and you only get good at that by experience in handling your own emotions and studying those of your opponents in the actual stress of competition and time pressure.

Just keep practicing. I practiced with my mom at chess when I just started learning and I beat everyone in my family now, even my brother! So just practice on someone that knows what they're doing and if nobody in your family knows well, there always has to be a first! LOL!

They say that the skill of a player can be determined by their first four moves. You want to get on the offensive as early as possible without kamikaze-ing your way in. Another good thing to learn is the four-move checkmate. I think the best way to learn chess is to just play someone over and over and you will learn from your mistakes and anticipate all of the moves that would have caught you off-guard before you started. No intensive study is involved, just regular practice
Hope it Helps :)
