On a 4.0 system, not bad. On a 5.0 system, not so good. A GPA is like a credit score. They all mean something different to everyone, and without more information, the score is worthless.

What would you say if you were my banker and I had two different FICO scores, one was 550 and the other was 780? Obviously, the scale used to measure means alot.

On a final note, many people who get into good schools, have average grades. Don't concentrate on just one area, but pretend like this is your job resume. School grades, areas of study, extracurricular activities, volunteer work, charity, and membership in fraternal or other organizations (4-H, FFA, etc) carry just as much weight.

Sell yourself in your letter to the Dean. Not just grades, but I have the grades and I find time to participate in all of these activities.

A 3.53 GPA is pretty good. When a school looks at your GPA, they also look at your highschools curriculum, how easily and often A's are given, how many students, and public/private. For example, a 3.53 GPA is really good if you are taking really hard classes (AP and Honors) or if your school is known to have hard subjectmatter. A 3.53 GPA might not be as impressive if you got it by getting good grades is "easy" classes, like P.E. or Art. Colleges also look at community service, SAT/ACT scores, extracurricular activities. These other factors can help you out if you feel that you lack in the academics department.

A 3.53 is a great GPA provided that those were college prep subjects. If your GPA includes 4 years of core academic subjects English, Math, Science and Social Studies as well as challenging electives it will be a help to any college you choose. If your GPA is in soft subjects (home ec, choir, etc instead of strong academics) it may stop you. The exception is art courses if you intend to go into art or art related majors. Colleges look at your GPA and your ACT and SAT scores.

gpa is only part of the equation. if you have a lot of extra curriculars, a decent test score, good reccomendations, and if necessary an awesome essay, a B to B+ gpa wont slow you down.
