Our kitchen is starting to smell bad and I think it's coming from the disposal. What can we put down there to make it smell cleaner?

This first thing you need to accept is that you will have to :-

put on a pair of rubber gloves,

take an old sponge with a scrub on the end,

remove the black plug and

using Soft Scrub or something with bleach - you will have to scrub the under side of the plug and the inside of the disposal clean.

Then every second week chop a lemon into quarters and run it in the disposal with the cold water running.

Next run a good amount of ice to sharpen your blades, it also cleans away any dirt left behind.

Be careful with bleach and other chemicals in the drains, especially if you are on a septic system. A good remedy for odors from drains is to run or pour a gallon or so of hot water down the drain, followed by a half box of baking soda. Flush this with hot water. That should get rid of your odors.

OK I'm here to save the day.
Les forgot vinegar.
Sam, no good! do not listen to her.
The bit about the charcoal is, use real charcoal and not grilling briquettes.
So very hot water (not super microwave hot, but hot.), then backing soda, lemon juice and vinegar, followed by hot water about 5 minutes later.
The bit about scrubbing under the rubber part is OK injunction with my advice.

Put some ice cubes and any citrus rinds (lemon, orange, lime etc.) I have't had any problems using this method. Bleach is a really good stink killer unless you're into less harsh products.

Baking Soda, a couple boxes a month ought to the trick.

try lemon juice/ pulp. Not the rinds though...they're not good for the disposal. Or I just spray bleach in my drains.
