I was seeing in someone's response to a question about Phoenix that there were fatal accidents on the freeways everyday. Is that true, should I avoid them if I am not familiar with the area?

Just like most larger metropolitan cities our freeways are heavily used and can be very congested during rush hours! However, they are No worse than San Diego, LA, Denver or Houston. Far too many drivers exceed the posted speed limits and fail to drive in a defensive manner. Yes, there are almost daily fatalities, but over 80% normally involve driver inattention, cell phone use or aggressive behavior.

The freeway system in the Phoenix area is actually really good. Phoenix did it right. As it has grown in the last 10 or 15 years, they have updated and expanded their freeway system. They are no more dangerous than any other freeways in any other city. I would warn you though about the surface streets. Most signals do not have a protected arrow to make a left turn. Even at major intersections.

no no no, you have to use the freeway. you will be forever and a day getting anywhere. yeah there are accidents, but honestly it is the drivers being idiots. using their cell phones, not paying attention to the traffic coming to a halt. just pay attention and you will do just great. ive been driving here since i was 18 and i havent been on an accident yet. i would say your more likely to wreck in town than on the freeway. its nothing compared to a nightmare.

The newer freeways are great! Just becareful cuz everyone drives fast like they are in a racing car. Alotta cut ins happen. Be on guard and drive defensively if needed. Otherwise the freeways really get you around the city north south, west and east. Really neat city. Im moving back there in two months. I cant wait.

Sidestreets can be just as dangerous. Two of the ten most dangerous intersections in the country are on Bell Road. Many people see yellow, and even red lights as "optional." Drivers are aggressive. No one does the speed limit, very little enforcement of moving violations.

Just drive more defensively than you're used to, and you'll be fine.

Phoenix is laid out like graph paper. Just about all roads continue forever going North/South or East/West. If you don't want to use the freeways, just get on one of the streets. I don't remember the freeways being particularly bad there. I do remember there isn't enough traffic code enforcement. Be cautious at the red lights is the main thing.

Well to tell you the truth there is an accident everyday in Arizona, that's no surprise to people living here. But not all are fatal, just be careful how you drive. You don't need to avoid the freeways/highways.

Drivers here are crazy!!!! They tail gate you, they drive 50 miles over the speed limit, big rig trucks even use the HOV/car pool lane!!! There are plenty of accidents especially on I-10, simply because people feel the need to wake up late to go to work and compensate by driving too fast and too close to cars in front of them!!!

Phoenix freeways are no more dangerous then anywhere else in the US. Just keep a defensive driving mentality and you'd be pretty much ok.
