Greenwich meridian time, the time zone centered on 0 degrees longitude, and extending 7 1/2 degrees into the Eastern and Western Hemispheres. AKA: CUT (coordinated universal time) UCT (unviversal coordinated time).
Often used in scientific observations, astronomy..to make it easier for scientists to communicate about universal events without worrying about time zones, daylight savings and the time of year....
The words alpha, ....are used in the military. They correspond with the +/- (number of hours from GMT) system. They are just different ways of naming the 24 zones.
