Most of it is out of respect, the only one that I dont think is out of respect is the redskins and teams generally like to name their teams after popular things in the area. So the tribe that the team is named after may have once been located in that area or the area has a high population of native americans. To the guy above me Indians are not savages if its anyone that is savages it the Europeans that came here stole their land, and killed them off with dieseases and guns. No offense to anyone.

A lot? Ok the Chiefs, hmmm let's see what else is a GOOD thing as far as Indians. Remember Redskin, although is period wise, is a SLUR against them. So what 2 of them? Maybe you are trying to throw Cowboys in as well. Heck why are so many named for Animals? That makes more sense as far as NUMBERS go. Why so many after thieving types? You have 3 of those-Bucs, Raiders, Vikings.

It wasn't out of respect. I am a Native woman and I can tell you that is for sure. When these teams were named there was definately no respect for Native people, look at the history. They were named this out of cultural ignorance and from stereotyping. Natives were/are stereotyped as warrior and savages. This image fits the goal of a sports team. They were/are also seen as less than human, more towards an animal. For this reason it wasn't seen as a problem to have a race of people as mascots. Also Natives are romanticized, people like the stereotypical image of a Native person. And to top it off people feel as if they have power over Natives, that they are going extinct, so they don't mind stealing the image of Native people.
Anyway you look at it is not respectful. It comes from stereotypical images and hurts Native culture.
