It matters that you buy the right ram for the motherboard. Crucials free scanner will tell you exactly what you need without opening the tower and also will tell you the maximum for your motherboard and empty slots. Once you have the results note them down and look elsewhere to purchase.

try to buy the same brand if you are buying a new one and replacing or the same size and brand if you are installing another one
