The obvious reasons are 1) It improves your chances of getting a job. 2) Statistically you will probably earn more money.
However, the lifestyle, the opportunities, the laughs, the experiences, the people you will meet, will guarantee you an experience that in my own life has never been surpassed. Don't underestimate what the social side of uni can do for you. One last tip: pick a decent uni not a crappy old poly!

Now of course, what job you get , and how well you get paid, depends on what career you choose to go into, what type of degree you get, and how much. But I think it is pretty safe to say that every year you spend in college, you can expect to increase your annual earnings or salary by about 20-40% or more.

Among the top 100 best paying jobs in America, nearly 95% require at least four years of college.

In general, for every dollar you spend on a college education, you can expect at least a 2000% return on your investment over your lifetime, if not more.

As is true today, an will probably be even more true in the future, you can expect steep competition for jobs that do *not* require a college education, from uneducated immigrant workers.

So I think it is safe to say that getting a degree is a good thing, however I suggest you find yourself a (somewhat) specific field of work that interests you, and get a degree that best suits that field, instead of going "general studies", like a lot of clueless college students. The more focused you are on a particular career, the more likely it is that you will be able to find a rewarding, and well paying job in that field.

P.s: Might I suggest that you *not* try to get a degree in English, Acting, Film or Photography, Music, clothing design, etc.....

Hi,

Yes, I loved it (I have 3 degrees, 2 batchelors and a masters).

The universities have open days, go along and have a look around. Go to higher eduction fairs. There are a few held every year in different parts of the country. Your school will be able to give you details.

You need to decide what A-levels to take so that you can decide which degree to take.

Do your A-levels at a local college not at school. It is a good training and preparation for university life and will be more fun.

Good luck in whatever you decide

Some careers require a university education. For example, scientists and doctors.

However, most people go to university for the simple reason that they see all their friends going so they think they had better too! There is little evidence that they will actually end up with a better job when they graduate.

I would be very wary of any pressure exerted on you by your school with regard to going to university, especially with regard to applying to the so called 'elite' universities. Your school will be more bothered about the statistics they achieve with regard to getting students into university. They are not so bothered about your future or indeed the huge debts you will amount by going to university.

If you go to Uni, better get involved and stay there. I hate university due to a lot of reasons. The whole concept of university doesn't really make sense as well.

However, its a piece a paper which shows you have achieved a standard. Just have fun whatever you do and laugh.

Besides the usual things, like it will help you get a good job and be an educated individual, going to university/college is a great experience.

You'll get to be on your own for the first time, get to choose what classes you want to take (for the most part) and meet interesting people from all over. Most people will tell you their college years were the best of their life. Go for it! :)

Nowadays in order to get a good job a college education is pretty much a must. If you don´t know what you want to do, start taking some community college classes in things that interest you and see what sticks.
