Its basically a download of a internet typically of a radio program.
Generally they are free and when you subscribe to them you get regular downloads automatically.
I subscribe to the following ones: (you can search in iTunes)

A podcast is something that an organization or website does periodically to inform users of what is happening. iTunes automatically downloads the file (video, or audio) if you have subscribed to that certain podcast. So, it is basically like a multimedia newsletter... that is free.
