The Earth will pass between the Sun and the Moon, completely blocking all sunlight from reaching the Moon. There are different phases that will occur: Penumbral, umbral, totality, umbral, penumbral. These are all parts of the eclipse when less or more light from the Sun will illuminate, or not illuminate, the Moon. The eclipse is caused by the shadow of the Earth passing across the surface of the Moon, nothing more.

why are people giving stupid answers (except one or two people), well the actual truth is there will be an alignment of sun, earth and moon in one line. where the moon will pass through the shadow of the earth, but it will not be spectacular like a solar eclipse. (I'm an amateur astronomer)

It will look real big and close and when the earth is directly in the path and it is a full eclipse it will look so neat.
when I was a kid me and my dad took a walk at the same time of the eclipse and watched the whole thing and it was so pretty and neat.

lunar eclipse...
The sun, earth and moon will all be on the same line... with the earth in the middle, the sun will cause the earths shadow to come over the moon. thus the eclipse.
