The bus was in the HOV lane. This means High Occupancy Vehicle.

I know this might be too soon to ask this question but I am going to plunge ahead and ask it:
The driver thought he had to be in the HOV lane because he had many occupants. Correct?
His intension was to go through Atlanta onto Florida where the baseball games were to be played.
This poor guy thought he was supposed to travel in this lane because he had many occupants!
Am I on the right track here?"
Diamond shaped symbols on roadway, high occupancy vehicles only, I must follow this lane, I must follow this lane, I must follow this lane.....
CRASH!!!
Am I off base here or could this be a valid reason why this poor guy crashed?

i've never drove a HOV before, nor do i want to do so. i have heard the info that you are referring to regarding that this driver may have thought this was the lane he needed to be in. i hate driving thru or in atlanta. it's horrible. hopefully the transportation dept will look at that exit and make changes if necessary to prevent something like that from happening again.

The driver was in the HOV lane. The road forked and he mistakenly exited up a ramp thinking he was still in the HOV. There was a road at the top of the ramp which the driver was going too fast to stop for and bus went into a low containment wall on the other side of the road, flipped and fell probably 30 feet upside down onto I 75.

As harda@@ as it may seem, the driver is responsible for keeping his vehicle under control AT ALL TIMES.

I know this from 30 years experience in the trucking industry.

Every day, thousands and thousands of drivers get into unfamiliar areas with sometime none-too-clear highway signs. They know how to deal with it. This is part of the job.

This accident is very, very sad. But nevertheless, the driver is at fault.

It appears he was going to fast and went over. Busses are top heavy, and most of the time, young people who go to camps, and outings toss their bags in any fashion in the lower bins, then a ton of junk on board. This, and the fact that the driver doesn't balance the passenger load and carry ons make that bus top heavy. If you noticed, most of the dead were sleeping, a good reason not to sleep on carriers.

I think this is the reason I heard. If he was from Ohio, the highways aren't denoted like that.
