When I hit the bass on my drum set, I get noise from my tom-toms, which makes the bass sound really bad. Do I need better hardware, a better drum set, or are there quick fixes and/or tips for this problem?

What about the tom-toms?

What kind of noise? A metallic rattle indicates perhaps a hardware problem, while a buzz from the head is perhaps a sympathetic overtone which a simple retune of that tom might fix. Check and make sure all hardware is tight (but not TOO tight) and there are no cracks in the shells, and try retuning the toms as needed. Beyond that...well drums can be a pain, can't they? :)

Sounds like your snare is quite loose. Tighten it up and tighten the stand. Also, move it so its an inch or two away from the bass. You will ALWAYS get little vibrations in the snare from the bass but shouldn't be so loud others can hear it clearly.

Perch on a granite cliff watching the Hudson march to the sea the sounds of a faint echo filling my ears with the cry of the past the drums caught in the mist of time still pounded by the Mohawk alive in the falls
