Obviously the favorites to win Cy Young are in the AL Johan Santana and in the NL Chris Carpenter, but I'm going to go "outside the box" and pick 2 candidates that most people would not think of. The pitchers that aren't the Halladays, Oswalts, and Webbs of the world, but may be soon......
First in the AL I am going to take John Lackey of the Angels. He is now, clearly, the ace of there staff and is just turning 28 years old. At times during last season Lackey completely dominated, I remember him having back to back shutouts with 10 K's in each. He also had 30 2/3 IP consecutively without giving up a run. If he ever gets run support like his teammate Ervin Santana Lackey could definitaly win 20 games. Lackey finished with a respectable 3.56 ERA (5th in the AL) and had 190 strikeouts (3rd in the AL). If Lackey becomes more consistent, and a bit less erratic, I do believe he will have a Cy Young season.
Next in the NL I will choose Carlos Zambrano who is going to turn 26 this season. Zambrano, much more erratic than Lackey, led the MLB in BB's for the second straight year (even more than Daniel Cabrera) still found a way to keep his ERA at 3.41 last year (5th in NL). This year he is also playing in his CONTRACT year, most players perform better in contract years than other years (see Alfonso Soriano). Zambrano also had 210 K's last year (4th in the NL) and collected 16 wins, even with a lousy cubs team. With Soriano added and Derrek Lee healthy I believe Zambrano will have the run support to win 20 games.
My Cy Young picks-John Lackey and Carlos Zambrano

AL- I would pick Santana if Liriano was healthy but I think since Liriano is expected to be out all year the team won't get enough wins for the voters to give him enough respect to win the Cy Young since they'll probably barely finish above .500, so I'd have to go with AL Cy Young Winner being Roy Halladay, and Verlander & Santana will both contend for it all season but come up short by a lil in the votes.
NL- Probably Chris Carpenter will win the Cy Young, St Louis only won 83 games last year cause team was banged up with so many injuries all season, and this year they'll all be healthy probably and he'll have a great season and maybe win 20 games, and will beat out contenders in the NL Jake Peavy and Jason Schmidt for the NL Cy Young.

3 Contenders for Each League
AL:
1. Johan Santana: Always wins at least 15 games, over 200 strikeouts evry year, and carried Minnesota with Justin Morneau. He has Torii Hunter and Michael Cuddyer who will play amazingly for him.
2. Roy Halladay: Toronto now has an amazing field that will decrease Halladay's pitch total and ERA. The team has even said they have more hope when Doc is on the mound. They might say that to get him to win another Cy, but hey i think its true. Roy has also been tinkering with a sinker in Spring Training, so that might provide another out pitch for Doc.
3. Rich Harden: He was hurt last year and is now the Ace for Oakland, something he hasnt had and has always wanted. He was always in the shadow of Barry Zito's Durability. Know hes healhty and is doing well in spring training.
NL
1. Barry Zito: Most durable pitcher and is bringing excitement to San Fran which takes the pressure away from Bonds. If Bonds doesnt have as much pressure, he will hit more homers, and if he hits more homers the Giants will win. Plus Dave Roberts is starting, and he'll provide better situations for San Fran
2. Chris Carpenter: He had an ok year last year, but now has an amazing infield with Rolen, Pujols, Kennedy, and Eckstein. All have won gold gloves. He has the capability of winning 20 games again and winning a Cy.
3. Aaron Harang: This guy is so underrated and i hope he turns into the next Brandon Webb. This guy had 216 strikeouts last year which was 2nd in the majors behnd Santana. To make matters better, his outfield is stacked with Griffey, Freel and Dunn. He is the ace right now but has a bit of comfort with Bronson Arroyo taking pressure for another good year.
My Picks: Santana and Zito
Hope this helps
Peace

American League will be Johan Santana, i just don't see this guy slowing down any from last year.
National League im going to pick the newcomer Barry Zito. Everyone knows the AL is a hitter league so being a very good pitcher in the AL Zito will be dominate in the NL.

Before the season even starts, it is absurd to bet against Johan Santana. He is the best pitcher in the game today, and his team will be good enough to get noticed (they are certainly better than the Blue Jays). Other than him, I think Felix Hernandez could have a surprising season. His stuff is too good for him to pitch like he did last year, and with more experience under his belt I could see him winning 20 for a bad Mariners team. In the AL I like Chris Capuano from the Brewers. He started strong last year before a late fade, but I think the Brewers will be better this year and Sheets will stay healty so there will be less pressure on Capuano. He is a tough lefty who can pick up K's, and I think the Brewers will make some noise in the playoff chase this year.

I think it's going to be a dark horse we aren't talking about in the AL. Johan and Dice K, Yankees, I think they will get all the attention. But considering his success, I think if the Angels are leading the NL west this, Jared Weaver could be a dark horse.
In the NL, I'm taking Brandon Webb to repeat. With a improving middle infield D behind him and and improved offense, I think he could flirt with 20 wins and a high 2 ERA, which would easily lead NL starters.

Why don't you let the season start first? I think baseball is going to have a very difficult season this year. I think people are more concerned about the Bonds issue and are waiting to see if he ends up in jail before seasons end. I certainly hope so. The Cy Young is BS. Last year proved that in the NL.
