I am knitting a little shrug for a newborn baby, how big do I make the rectangle?

she's about 10lbs in weight - I don't mind if it is too big but don't want to do it too small!

At least 21 inches long, if you want it a bit long so baby can grow into it. The span from fingertip to fingertip is the same as one's height. Most newborns are in the 19 to 22 inch height range, so 21 inches should fit with some room to spare.
