in the fifth book you find out WHY voldemort goes after the potters (harry), at the end where she always wraps things up.

ps, 5 is my fav you are in for a treat! reading the books for the first time is so awesome, you can't put them down!

i don't remember ever reading why he decided he wanted to kill james for sure but that lily could live if she just handed harry over, some people speculate that it could have something to do with snape.

Did you actually read the books? James Potter was killed because he was trying to protect his family when Voldemort came after Harry.
Overall I like the fourth and the fifth one though the twist at the end of the third one is great.

He wanted to kill the Potters because they opposed him, you learn a LOT more about that in the 5th book. You also learn why he wanted to kill Harry specifically at the end of the 5th book. Anoher reason for killing the Potters, James was a pureblood, and Lily was Muggleborn (Mudblood). In Death Eater circles, that was a big no-no, it would be like the KKK going after a racially mixed couple.
My favorite book was also the third one... funny, cause so far I've hated being 13 the most....

He wants to kill Harry because Trelawney made a prophecy describing someone who would be able to destroy Voldemort. He discovered that the boy in the prophecy was Harry Potter so he needed to kill him and Lily and James were in his way.

Because of the prophency. It's said there that a boy, born in the middle of the summer will kill Voldemort. There were two boys who were possibly the Boy and they were Harry and Neville. Voldemort had chosen Harry because... I don't remember why but he had chosen him and tried to kill him. Of course his parents wanted to save him and Voldemort used the "Avadacedavra" spell against them.

You learn why he wants to kill Harry in the 5th book. It's a bombshell.... keep reading =) Third book's my my favorite. Fifth is my least favorite. It can be long at parts without much going on.
