I have Sirius. I love it. However, I will love it even more when XM and Sirius merge. This allow increase the number of channels as well as the distance for any satellite reciever.
The merger may take place by the end of 2007. This merger will not effect anybody with either radio. If you're a XM or Sirius subscriber, you will get all content.
Terresterial radio is slowly coming to an end.

Here's the answer....
1. The DOJ doesn't give a rip it is it FTC Federal trade commission who is reviewing the deal right now.
Current XM receivers can never get Sirrius and visa versa, but it sounds like the CEO of XM is handling the helm at the new service which I have heard suggested that current subscribers can get a brand new radio at little or no cost, but that will all have to wash out. and who knows when the FTC will roll on it.

No one is sure. Some are saying that combining them will be a monopoly with satellite radio. The satellite companies are working around this as they will be in competion with free terrestrial stations.
Many of the big media companies want this merger to happen. Today just radio but in this increasingly wireless world the next step is satellite video, everywhere on any device. Regular TV, cable companies, internet providers, newspapers and radio stations are struggling with this fact of life. So to answer it could be just a matter of months before they combine.

I believe in the email we received it's supposed to come together some time next year (provided the merger gets all approval).
This is a paragraph from the email xm subscribers were sent:
"This merger should be completed in late 2007 or early in 2008.
Throughout the year, we will provide updates on how the merger is progressing and information will be available at our website, www.xmradio.com."

Everyone saying that it won't happen is incorrect. What WILL happen if the merger goes through is that Sirius will broadcast XM content and XM will broadcast Sirius content. As long as you have some kind of satellite radio, you'll be able to get both when they merge.

You may see it as soon as the end of this year, before the companies can legally merge they have to be cleared to do so by the FCC and the DOJ. And terrestrial radio is spending tens of millions in a lobby to stop the merger (even going so far as to hire former Attorney General John Ashcroft to write a letter on their behalf to the DOJ). Right now its a huge legal game, but if the deal is structured right and the public will benefit, then the merger will be approved. I have faith that it will be.

if it is approved by the fcc, then by the very end of 2007, beginning of 2008. if the fcc finds it to be a potential monopoly, then we just have to choose xm or sirius o listen to.

actually, you already can. there are aftermarket head units on the market today that allow you to receive both brands of satellite. some even come stock (in high end vehicles such as bmw) AND have HD FM with them. go to your nearest audio shop and ask them what they have. satellite radio is the bomb! i even have sirius in my 71 volkswagen!! get it, and enjoy it. it's worth the 12.95 per month.
