if your hamster cage had bars at the top, it will chew for most of the night, which can annoy you if you're sleeping, they can also get out of their cage like mine has done, i would keep the gerbil but train it, you could get a hamster if u wanted they are very cute, but also very noisy

They both chew. I had hamsters and a gerbil (at different times).Everyone of them chewed holes in the cages.
Get a rat, they don't bite and are awesome. We have 3, I've never seen any of them chew on the cage, just keep chew sticks in it.

Having had both gerbils and hamsters I can tell you that, while both species gnaw, hamsters do so far less. Gerbils are also more prone to chewing plastic, and man are they good, they can chew like little demons!

sometimes if there hungry,or want to come out,my hamster did it all the time,and he stopped after i took it out for a while
