Chinamerica. The Wall Steet Journal published a long essay within the last few months summarizing some academic research suggesting that China and the U.S. should be looked at together as a symbiotic unit in world economics which is the dominant unit according to major indicators (presumably environmentalists would agree). Both governments have an interest in globalization. In world politics, both states, working together seem likely to achieve some decisive results. Both have an interest in stabillity (but differ on other values, particularly human rights — at least at the verbal level). The U.S. has its war on teror; China is iin conflict with Islamic insurgents in the resource-rich Sinkiang territory on its far west. The two countries have many issues that divide them, but this is not unusual for de facto allies with compellling overriding interests. So, though I wouldn't bet on it (contingency is everythning in world politics, and emerging patterns can be dashed by all sorts of things, including political egos of leaders), I'd watch this possibility closely over the next years (or the following decades, I should live so long). If this emerges, it will be less of a revolution (fall of the U.S., dominance of China) than an evollution of empire, aka "world order."

Well, if you are able to put the popular media to the side and think about this objectively, you will soon realize that America is not coming to an end anytime soon- but probably will come to an eventual end.
One of the reasons we have a good standard of living and so many profitable companies has to do with our economic market system. We can focus vast resources (trillions of dollars) where it will do the most good for our society. This is largely because we have a regulated system that allows everyday people to save and invest money via the stock market. Collectively, that money is used by corporations to invent and produce technology products, create new pharmeceuticals, build new houses, build new factories, etc. Additionally, despite what the media would have you believe, we have one of the best educational systems in the world- admittedly, the lower levels are not the best but our most highly educated persons (PhDs, MBAs Dr.'s, et.) are among the best in the world.
We have vast natural resources. We are net exporters of food- we produce more than we can consume.
There are other countries that have some of these attributes but I cannot think of one that has all of these advantages. Japan and most of the European countries have equal education, movement of capital resources, but they do not have vast natural resources and they are also importers of food. China has vast resources but the government tinkers with the economy too much so it becomes less efficient.
Yes, the USA faces some difficult issues such as middle east zealots that will continue to hammer away and cause as much destruction as possible. I personally believe they will have a minor impact on our future.
If we do not get out Social Security under control (a political timebomb) we will go from spending 5% of our GNP to 15% or more with little in the way of return. This sort of issue will lower our standard of living in the world but still not enough to significantly lower our status in the world. Similarly, we should not be spending an excessive amount of our GNP on healthcare- although this is less concerning because we do get value from this in the way of longer lifespans and new technology.
This global warming debate also has me concerned. There are many in political power causing a panic and using the media to whip the sheeple (people that act like sheep and follow the flock mentality) into a frenzy. The message I hear is "your CO2 emissions are bad- but mine are okay". Every person emits CO2 with every breath so the attitude that it is pollution is ludicrous to me. Should we be burning through all the energy that we do- probably not and I think its good that we are all aware and taking steps to lower our carbon footprint. However, I fear there will be a new round of taxes and that will cripple our economy and further reduce our capital market efficiency.
We have had many scandals involving fraud and security abuse. Even though most CEOs are ethical, the few bad apples have ruined the whole bushel and we will all pay the price for that. NEw laws and skepticism both lower our ability to move capital resources to where it might do the most good.
So, to answer your question- who will be the next empire- we might find out in our lifetime or maybe not. Its too early to tell but watch for cultural or systemic changes made by entire governments or societies- others will be making improvements while it seems the USA government is on a path of avoid the real issues (unfunded promises like social security) and pass them on to future generations while focusing on other issues that will cripple us (like CO2 taxes). Other countries will be taking steps to improve their status and you will have to watch to see who makes the most progress.

We are not coming to an end. Perhaps some things will change but the USA will remain. We need to shift this military mindset to business. It is harder to cooperate with commerce than it is with weapons. Weapons are the easy way Because for us to have commerce and perhaps work together on things like space exploration and alternative energy sources we have to bridge communication barriers, overcome religious bias, have infinite patience and the ultimate in tolerance. It takes effort to build a communication bridge between humans in different parts of the world because things are different. Look at Russia, we got no beef with them now, just took some time and we didn't have to go to war. Imagine, if we stopped fighting the peace and prosperity we would all have through the tolerance of other humans ways and customs.
I am sure that we can have peace, through mutual respect for the differences that there are in the world. There is no best answer.

USA doesn't own any countries as such (they do take up a heck of alot of natural resources though). The British empire actually owned countries, the USA is just the largest super power.
As to who will be the next super power, I think probably China, but they have alot of problems to sort out first.

The US is not an empire. It, like Europe, has no imperialistic vision as we enter into the 21st century. I believe that we will see a shifting away from highly independent nation-states and move more towards interdependent regional states.

Yes I believe that the Anti-Christ has to reveal himself soon.
Doesn't the Anti-Christ rule for the time before the new Covenant? Before Israel gets her 7 years as promised.
The land will flouish and be beautiful.
The promised land is a very large, large piece of land.
I believe that Iran's days are numbered as the little man from Iran has announced his Anti-Semitism.

This reminds me of a joke. It's a bit dated, but...
Leonid Brezhnev phones Ronald Reagan on the hotline and says, 'Mr President, last night I had a dream. I dreamed there was a red flag flying from the White House. There was writing on it, and do you know what it said?'
'Nope', replies Reagan.
'It said, "Long Live the Glorious Soviet Union"'
'Oh, really,' says Reagan, 'well, I had a dream last night, too. I dreamed there was a red flag flying from the Kremlin. And there was writing on it as well.'
'What did this writing say then?'
'I don't know, Leonid. I can't read Chinese.'

Uganda. That Mugabe really has it together. What a model leader for Africa. Where are Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson when you need them? I guess they are hogging camera shots somewhere else.
