No disrespect to Nate Clements, but making him the highest paid defensive player in history!! I think thats a little crazy. What does everyone else think?

the niners are desperate to fix their secondary...and i really mean desperate. secondly the niners have the most cap room of all the nfl teams. so if you are desperate for a certain player, and you have the ability to do it, then go do it. there is not a real good free agency pool of Cornerbacks this year, since Samuel was franchised.
Mike Nolan knows what he is doing. bringing a team from 2-14 to 7-9 in 2 years is hard to pull off

Is Nate Clements the best defensive player of all time? No. Not at all. But every year we see that the market dictates pay. How much money did Gary Matthews Jr. get? How much did JD Drew get? Chris Kaman? Anyway, the point is that a players production is not that determines rate of pay. This is not salary cap fantasy football. The 49ers have spent the past four seasons preparing for this signing. They dropped Stubblefield, Winborn, Rattay, Owens, Garcia, Parrish, Plummer, Peterson and Barlow because they had screwed themselves financially. They wanted to rebuild and have done a rather good job of it over the past two seasons in all respects other than at WR and CB. Their most glaring need is in the secondary and he was the best out there. Clements got tons of money. So did Gary Matthews because there were very few OF FAs. Hell, Randy Wolf got 8 million for a year just cuz he's a lefty.

The point is, professional sports, just like the US is a capitalist economy and culture. A rare and valued commodity is going to go way higher than its functionality would dictate. That's why an Abercrombie wifebeater is 50 bucks. Supply and demand and ability to pay. Believe me, if the niners could have paid out half that contract they would have, but the fact that he went to them for 80 million means that someone else was going to pay 79 million. It's just the way it goes.

Next year I'm sure we'll see Charlie Frye get $75 million deal and we'll all wonder the same damn thing...

Spending that much money on any player is going to hurt, but Clements was the best DB available, and these days, you usually have to overpay for talent. Wait until they make a pitch to Jamarius Thomas (LB for the Ravens). In the long run, they can always cut Clements, and eat up part of the contract, not the whole thing. They are heading in the right direction, and their secondary needed a playmaker. Now about those WRs... or a backup for Frank Gore...

I agree there at least 10 maybe 20 guys that I can think that deserve that kind of money more than Nate Clements. Go crazy with money like that is not good for them 5 years down the line because they will have to eventaully have to cut them all and they will be right back where they are now.

49ers will regret this...the Bills front 7 were always putting pressure on the QB so that Clements looked like a superstar..without that pressure, he will be exposed, especially vs big strong receivers. Should have picked up a cheaper guy they could work with, but that would require research and if they were going to bother with research they would have researched Nate enough to know he's no Champ Bailey..

Im a life time niner fan and when i saw how big the contract was I about sh*t myself. But I guess the contract is set up where the 7th and 8th years are worth 36 mil. He will never see those last 2 years because the contract will be restructured or he"ll be cut. That essentially makes the contract a 6yr $44mil contract. Which is about right for a top five CB who has about 6 good years left (hes 27).

I haven't seen the details of the deal but that is definitely a huge cap hit for a single player. He is a decent CB but $10 million a year? Doesn't seem worth it.

Probably not crazy. Maybe just scheming. Or think of this...
Nate gets his money from playing ball, peoplre like Vernon get thier money from that AND Chevy. Besides he's unrestricted.

It might of seem to extreme, but he was the only player worth having out the free agents to get, and he really needed him, so if they have the money to spend why not!!!
