hey.
i play bass too.. and i asked roughly the same question but on a forum.

the answers i got back were mostly saying that you should go to different guitar/bass stores and get the store people's opinion (wow thats wordy).
try some different basses out and see which ones you like best and so on.

also, it depends on what you want. wether it be a battery charged bass or whatever the case may be.

but i hope you find an awesome bass... good luck!

Save your money & spend a little more. You pay for what you get & I'm sure you'll be wanting something better than what you get for $150-$200. Check out interstate music.com. I've been using them for years. They beat musician's friend hands down. Rock on! I'm sure you will love playing the bass.

Your best bet is to start shopping local music stores and look for a used one. make sure the neck is straight and the strings are new. Fender is a popular brand. My daughter found an ibanez( also good brand) for around 150. Just shop around!

I agree w/ Raymond K.
However, if you absolutely cannot go over $200, check out ebay for slightly used Fenders.
They have a solid sound and timeless look.
