I am a student right now and was carpooling with 'Jane', she is now talking behind my back...what do I do, 'put up and shut up' and when the schooling is done just pretend I never knew her? I would speak up for myself , but she definately seems to have the talent for lies...I'm confused, and frustrated!

I would ask Jane to speak with her in private.
I would let Jane know that I have heard she is speaking about me behind my back and let her know that i do not appreciate it. i would say that if jane has something to say, she should be able to say it in front of me or not at all.

from this point on i would only tell jane what i would consider acceptable to pass onto other's, simple things only, so no matter how twisted she repeats it, it cannot be taken out of context (i.e. i would not tell her anything i would not want everyone to know).

you have to pick your battles. jane sounds like the type of person who needs attention and gets it mostly from spreading gossip about others... you are just jane's newest target. maybe you should carpool with someone else - or take the bus.

Ignore it, then you're behaviour will raise your status above the chattering minions. The chatter is not worthy of any more of your thoughts.

Treat her extra nicely and make her feel guilty
