jungefrankenstein has it right.

There were/are terms in the south to give a degree of black blood (what a concept) such as "octoroon" (one eighth), and by skin tint ("high yellar" etc.). It was for purposes of keeping all descendants of slaves as slaves.

The other end of the spectrum is with American Indians where tribal registration is limited by the amount of indian blood. The quantum is in theory set by the tribes, but the government really fights anything less than 25%. It is for reasons opposite the black blood thing, it is a form of genocide, intended to make the tribes fade out. What they are saying is "If you marry somebody outside our rules, your children will not be of your culture.

Even among people of mixed race there are some strange distinctions. Starting on the east coast of north america in the 16th. century, people of mixed indian and white blood were called "Métis" (pronounced may-tee) or courriers du bois. In the 19th. century one group of mixed ancestry rebelled against the crown up in Canada. When they were given minority status a few years back, the Canadian government only recognized the people in one restricted group, and ever since there has been strife over who is Métis and who is not.

In the U.S., since no recognition has been granted by the government, there are millions who regard themselves as Métis, sharing cultures. The tern is French for median, mixed, in the middle or mongrel depending on who is doing the translation.

I think it's just that Caucasians are such a mixture of backgrounds, that are all Caucasians, and we all just look like white people, so if there is another race mixed in, that is what distinguishes the person from just being Caucasian... it stands out that there is another race there.

I am a Caucasian mutt, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, Dutch, Cherokee, and English. If I had more Cherokee in me, I would be considered Indian, but since it's not enough to show, I am Caucasian.

surely i think of the mixture oftentimes advantages the two races. have you ever seen Alicia Keys, Goapele, Leona Lewis, Vanessa Williams, and u.s.'s president these days? i don't in my opinion comprehend the Halle love yet she has been called the main beautiful woman interior the international so she could be doing something good. i comprehend those are all celebrities yet many on a daily basis blended human beings are stunning. human beings are in basic terms human beings, you are able to not "dilute" blood or weaken it. If something, diveristy in a gene pool will make it superior that's why lots of mulattos and mutts are such helpful persons.

white people made that call. It used to be that unless you were all white, then you were not white at all. Now that white people are not reproducing, and the population is getting smaller, they wanna claim the half breeds, but its too late. You made the bed. now lie in it.

It's the one drop rule passed on from slavery. If you have any "black" genes, you are black. (you end up with way more slaves this way)
