The way people now live makes it difficult to get on without a bank account. At one time, if you wanted a new front door, you kept a few pounds a week out of your wage packet and when you saved enough you got the new one fitted. Now it's overdrafts and loans.
If you can get paid cash, pay your bills by cash and keep your money secure, then you don't need one.
You will find that retailers need to pay Securicor to collect the cash and cash can be stolen by staff so it makes more sense for them to take cards. That's why supermarkets do cash back, get some of the money out of the store. Did you know there's more cash in a branch of a supermarket than a bank !!

A very intelligent question. Since the average person earns $20 000 pa. And pays rent and taxes and other bills like phone and other stuff. The resultant balance is not Worth a fa*t. So I think that the government is aiding the fat cat bankers to fleece the public by insisting that all salaries be paid into bank accounts thereby resulting in overdrafts and excess charges.
But after payments the real balance would not pay for a meal in a 5 star restaurant with a cheap champagne. It is sad of the deluded working class to think they are better off when they use a plastic card instead of cash thereby enriching some middlemen for using your own money. And getting into debt at the same time. The fact is that 80% of the worlds population do not have any need for a bank account because they rarely have enough money to leave in it.
The thought that if you dont have a bank account, "You will have to keep it under the floor boards" is one of those "logical" arguments that really have no value practically. It conjures an image of vast wads of notes being stuffed under the.....Ha ha ha ha I cant take it!

You should not have to have one if you do not wish to. Unfortunately, it is becoming another mark-up for Big Brother. With a bank account, to a certain extent what you do with your money can be traced, especially if you are a creature of habits. Also without one it makes it difficult to pay your accounts and bills, as the money has generally to be sent to another town, especially if you are paying for utilities. In the `old days` , it was difficult for `ordinary` people to get a bank account and most did not have one, however they were able to pay their bills in cash ; because there was an electricity and gas and rates office/shop in every area even the small villages. All these places have been closed down, so people are forced to send the payment by post, so a cheque has become necessary. It is yet another sad example of how we are all being controlled by commerce and government.

It works for me because I need control, without the Bank account, I used to spend everything and never knew what I was buying. Now, with the Bank account, I know exactly how much I have and what I am getting from my money. It also helps me keep track of my expenses and my bills paid on time, I have online bill payment. Maybe is not the greatest way to keep control of the money but it works. I save on money orders - now I use my own checks - and the Bank can provide statements so you can prove you paid something already if the company claims you owe them, etc.

Freedom is awesome! In America you don't have to have a bank account like the socialist countries! We have freedom of choice here. Or at least we use to! The banking system helps loan money out to make jobs, help people buy cars and houses, as well as protecting your money with FDIC insurance! Some politicians would make you put money in the bank if they could but I would recommend putting money into an account for your own good and to help build interest!

You don't have to have a bank account. and I agree with you...
The thing is you must consider the safety of your money, like a good quality safe secured in a conspicuous place.....Years ago people couldn't trust banks, they kept their money at home....But crime was nothing like it is now........Banks nowadays input different curses upon you, as you no doubt already know.
Go ahead and get a safe, for your use only.....If someone will not accept a payment, then refuse to offer, there is nothing they can do about it. As far as I know there is no law to say that a person cant deal in cash.......Good for you.....

If you have been told by the DWP that you have to have you Pension/Allowance paid into a bank account, this is wrong.
You can, if this is the case, continue to draw you benefit from the Post Office as and when you like using the Post Office Card Account. The DWP will top it up every week with your money.

You don't have to have a bank account but it makes life much, much easier if you do have one. I recently came back from living abroad and didn't have an account, my employer couldn't pay me and it was difficult to pay rent and bills etc. If you shop online, book flights or hotels, want to rent a car (and hundreds of other services) you need a bank or credit card. It would be great to not rely on banks and help them make multi-billion profits but they have us stitched up.

I think your money would be a lot safer in a bank than lying around your house, you can also have a post office account, either way i would suggest you looked into one to keep your money safe from all those burglers waiting to get it!!!
