I have a craftsman digital multimeter. I want to test the stator on my kawasaki ex500 to see if it is actually charging the battery. I need to know what setting to turn the knob to on my multimeter to test this and where i need to position the positive and negative probes.

Your meter should be set to AC Volts, on a range that will show up to 200 volts. Locate the three wires coming from your stator. Mark them A, B & C. Measure between A & B, A & C, and B & C. You should have voltage across all three. I'm sorry, I don't know the spec. for Kawasaki, I played with Hondas. Be aware that most systems don't really charge at idle. Voltages will be low until you increase throttle. Have you checked the regulator / rectifier yet? The electronics usually go before the windings. Probe position is not an issue when doing simple tests on AC.

static test, do not run engine. find 3 white wires in block connector under left side panel. disconnect block. set meter to ohms. any pair should have continuity and low resistance.(as explained above, A&B, etc) check for grounding, if it does, its bad. make sure you test wires going to engine and not to rectifier/regulator
