I've recently learned that my niece has experimented with cutting herself and my daughter also says she has a friend that cuts herself. I'm concerned what influence this can have on my daughter to try it too.

i used to cut myself as a teenager as i moved to a new country, was dealing with my parentz divorce, got sexually harrassed by my psychologist n wasnt able to tell my parentz, was away from my siblings and i got bullied at my new school...i had a bf who took advantage of me and my whole life was upside down...i'd go to crowded places n feel all alone all the time bcuz i had no one to talk to as my parentz blamed me for their divorce n hearing them fight every night tortured me to the core...i'd cut myself cuz as the blood would come out of my body, it would soothe me cuz of the slow movement...i did it for attention cuz no1 was willing to talk to me without telling me about the mistakes i made with my life...honestly..when i look bk at it...it was the most depressing time of my life...i felt like a crazy person..but itz been three years n everything is fine now...i have friends, the best bf ever, my parentz arent got bk together...everything is perfect....media influenced me to do it...itz all about the media...trust me.

Cutting is when teens literally take a blade and cut themselves. It's unhealthy, and the main reason they do it (or how they explain why they do it) is the physical pain will keep their mind from whatever emotional pain they are going through.

You might want to approach your niece's parents about this. It is becoming more "popular" with teens to do this - with varying reasons - but it's not always peer pressure. It usually has something to do with something going on at home.

There are different reasons why teens cut themselves.
Some want attention. They feel unwanted, unloved, or they just want people to notice them and wonder why they have cuts on their arms and ask them. Instant attention.
Some people actually have pain. They cut to make themselves feel. Others may cut because it's the only pain they feel they have control over. They can cause the pain by cutting themselves with anything sharp, from knives to razors, anything sharp works. And they can stop it by washing it, putting on a band-aid...
I used to cut myself. I didn't do it for long, I did every day for about two weeks. I felt everything a person shouldn't feel. I felt stupid, pathetic, worthless, ugly, fat, you name it, I felt it. I cut myself because I felt as though I deserved to be punished.
It's a horrible thing. I had to make up a lame lie for the cut on my arm. I'm long gone and over cutting now, but it's hard, because people always look at the scar on my arm, call me "emo", taunt me for it, and act as though it's a crime. It's not something to be made fun of, it's not something that anyone should try.
Although, if your daughter does it for "experimenting" or attention, then you have a nice long talk with her, okay?

cutting is just that. find something sharp and cut yourself with it. the reasons behind it differ. I have a friend who was having a really hard time with things and felt like noone cared about her. she told me that she cut herself because she wanted to see if she was real...people treated her badly;as though she had no feelings....she cut herself to see if she could still feel.....to have something dull the emotional pain....when you cut, it's beacuse you are in emotional anguish and want something...ANYTHING...to break through that pain...whether or not it leaves physical scars doesn't matter, as long as something stops the emotional hurt....but it is dangerous....get them help....before it goes too far.....

cutting is a psychological disorder and needs therapy. usually the cutter is in emotional pain and cuts their own flesh to feel pain somewhere else.

What?harming themselves.
Why?They said, it was for fun.
At least, they were trying to say that they seek attention. That is the best answer on why they made such fun of those things too.
All you need to do is to tell her the position of those who recently did it and convince her, it is not worthed trying it.
And give attention too.
