I am a politics student and recently took a mock exam, but struggled with providing a good conclusion.
The question was on the disadvantages of a codified constitution and the points i used were that it was hard to refer to and didnt specify where the power lies.
These points were acceptable but i was told my conclusion wasnt good enough, so i was hoping somebody could tell me what sort of things i need to write in a conclusion generally, the length etc and possibly provide me with a good example of a conclusion.
thanks

in the introduction of the essay, mostly hypotheses and philosiphy will apply, ergo you debate yourself and develop your way into a focused thesis statement. therefore, in the conclusion you need to begin by restating your thesis as a summarization of what you have learned through the course of writing the paper. so you need to substantiate or debunk your hypotheses and your philosophy with evidence or details covered in the body of the essay. then end it with a strong statement, or with a question that will stimulate the reader's intellect further than just reading the essay.

socrates taught us that in basic formal presentation, you tell the audience what you are going to tell them (introduction), then you tell them(body), then you tell them what you told them (conclusion)

i wrote this paper for a 300 level poly sci class and it got an A+, hope this conclusion helps...

"Solutions to the Chechen problem ethically exclude the economic ramifications. The real war is fought over questionable ethnic tendencies and the prohibition of Islamic ideological rule in the region. As the main proprietor in the war on terror, the U.S. has a moral obligation to cooperate with Russia and the rest of the international community in apprehending the ever elusive radical Basaev and his followers. During the search for Basaev, Putin must declare autonomy for Chechnya, while maintaining his military presence for temporary martial law in Chechnya, publicly stating the withdrawal of Russian troops when the radical militant sects are disbanded and Basaev is apprehended. The international community must make absolute certain that the Russian military is withdrawn. The only logical social solution lies with persuading Putin’s war effort to extend authority to the international aid agencies, with UN intervention, to wage a massive rebuilding effort in Chechnya to regain civilian support. An outside positive Islamic presence within the UN rebuilding effort would greatly increase the chances of cooperation. The key to peace is zero tolerance for radical Islam and terrorism."

I was just going to give you the old adage about essays: Tell them what you are going to tell them, then tell them, then tell them what you told them. Meaning the conclusion should just be a concise summary of the paper. But this website states it better "The triangle of the introduction is inverted in the conclusion. Instead of narrowing, you expand. Begin by restating your thesis, retracing the steps of your argument. By doing so you remind the reader of how the components of the essay fit together and strengthen their cumulative effect. Because this paragraph is a conclusion, you must be conclusive; that is, you must present your thesis in its final, most persuasive form" http://web.uvic.ca/wguide/Pages/EssayWritingConclusions.html
(If the link doesn't work just type essay + conclusion + u vic into google) They also give a good example of a conclusion.
