I bought a Dyson DC15 "Animal" thinking the latest and greatest Dyson would be incredible. It was not. Then I researched best vacuum's through Consumer Reports. The Dyson didn't score very well on carpet or pet hair. In fact they came in 16th & 17th for the DC 14 & DC 15 respectivley. The brand that came in at the top of the list was Kenmore Progressive with Intelliclean {35922}. It senses when it is picking up more crud and will automatically add additional power.
My $650 Dyson is gathering dust, my $300 Kenmore is picking it up!

Consumer Reports says the best vacuum of 2007 is Kenmore (sears) Progressive with Direct Drive 35922. The price is $300.

The Bagless Bissel Powerforce. (Wal-Mart - anywhere bet. $40-$80 depending on if it's for sale) All the filters on it are WASHABLE! You do not need any tools to take it apart and maintain it. If it is maintained, well, I can tell you as a self-employed housecleaner, specializing in doing nasty evictions, I have cleaned up some stuff you can't even imagine and that Bissel Powerforce rolls on and on! It is better than the Dyson on pet hair, according to Consumer Reports, and I would agree. It is also lighter weight.

Sorry about being partial, but Kirby is by far the best Home cleaning system anyone could have. Well worth the extra money and they will last a lifetime.

kirby they cost more than the usual but picks up dirt and grime very well plus it has alot of xtra features that alot of upright vacuums dont have. ie you can convert it to a shampooer and a handheld to vacuum your car etc. good luck

I don't know what the best brand is but a self-propelled one is much easier to use.
