two words: MOTH BALLS
seriously, my grandma, and my neighbor had birds making nest up on a like 1 inch ledge on the roof of their porches! they sprayed the nests with the hard sprayer of the hose and everything, but they rebuilt their nests by the same time the next day, so they put up moth balls and the birds left!
good luck!

There is a product called nix a lite. It is metal tines that are used to put on ledges, eaves etc, that keep the birds from landing. I have bought this before and have used it on many jobs where customers were complaining about getting rid of nests and doo doo in and around the outside of the home. I do not have the website handy, but google it. NIXALITE. Good luck

Ironically, most birds are afraid of owls. If you go to a local hardware store you will find plastic owls for sale. Strategically place a few around the outside of your house, on the roof, preferably, and they will help to keep most birds at bay.

When I was in high school I worked at a Kentucky Fried Chicken. After a few weeks of being the "new guy" I asked the fatal "new guy" question...."What are those owls doing on the roof and why don't they ever seem to move?"

The theory was explained to me by the manager, and it seemed to work. From then on, I would have the newest employees go outside with a few old biscuits to "feed the owls" as a joke.

Most of them caught on after a few trips outside, but a few didn't.

Grab yourself a few plastic owls. Just don't bother feeding them!

The problem is in your question: "opening"
nail up a screen. Even if you shoot one bird (ugh...then you have to deal with a dead bird) an opening is just an invitation.
