She once went to a dance school in Bridlington where we used to live ( it wasn`t a special needs school ) and the teacher there asked her to show her a sample of her work(she does all her own choreography) - she was amazed! She said that if you couldn`t see that she was downes then you certainly wouldn`t be able to tell by her dancing.
We have now moved and I can`t find a local dance school or theatre group. I really want to help her in her chosen career as she really enjoys it and she is very dedicated - she practises her routines every day without fail.
We live in Peterlee , county durham - anyone got any ideas?

I am not from your area, and certainly I can appreciate your situation, until you find a dance school is there something similar available.

There is a Dance division of figure skating that is very kind.

Also network with the music schools they may combine with some other local talent in the community, drama too might have more information too.

Head down to the local University, they may have resources you were not aware of.

Bless... that is such a gorgeous question. She might become famous one day!! I dont live near you but I would try searching on the internet or if you have a local town hall or theatre maybe you could ask in at their enquiry office if there are any local dance schools who use their stages etc??
If she is gifted you may have to travel far to get her in somewhere good!
Good luck to you and wish her all the luck in the world from me... keep up the good work! xx

In Southgate, North London is an amazing theatre company which specifically looks after people with this and other syndromes. They are called "Chicken Shed". They also have "Sheds" around the country. See link. All the very best, how wonderful to have such talent!

My daughter is a dance teacher in Manchester (Latin and Ballroom, it is not that unusual many Downes children have a natural sense of rythm. She teaches for the IDTA international dance teachers assoc, possibly they may be able to give you a local address try the following link.www.idta.co.uk It is lovely to hear of someone who obviously does not see Downes as a disability. I believe that we all have a purpose in life and should all try to reach our full potential. good luck toboth of you and keep dancing.
