Find a good chiropractor and make an appointment. If it is severe your back is going to have a hard time to fix itself. If something is out of place you need to get it put back into place. If you haven't been to a chiropractor before, no worries...do not be afraid. Ask your frineds/family/co-workers/or at your local health store what chirorpractor they prefer in your local area and why. You want someone that other people trust and have had success with.
Chiropractors are not bone crushers/crackers, they simply manipulate the spine, joints, and muscles. Don't fear that they will break you. They know what they are doing and if you want them to work very gently they can and will.
A first visit will probably run $50-$60 and follow-up visits $35-$40. A lot of insurance companies cover the full cost or partial cost of chiropractic visits. This is cheap compared to surgery and drugs that allopathic medicine provides.
If you are looking for a natural pain reliever, some people have found that Bromelain (enzyme from pineapple) helps...it must be taken between meals for that purpose. Also found useful by some is MSM (methyl-sulphur methane). There are creams which you can purchase from your local health store as well. A warm bath in natural bath salts with lavender (helps to relax the muscles) + ice (helps to reduce inflamation) + chiropractic visits helped me when I severely hurt my back last spring.

Exercise the back muscles and do stretches for your upper and lower back. The stronger the muscles surrounding the affected area the less the pain will be. Now, here is something that may sound crazy, but it works!! - Eat about 20 cherries a day . This helps reduce pain and swelling - works like an anti-inflammatory.
I switched my anti-inflammatory meds for cherries and did the recommended stretches (though it tooks week to build my body up to the "starter" level for suggested stretches because of excessive pain) and there was such a difference!!

I found that every person reacts differently to different type of treatments. I've tried "Western" - Allopathy (pills, steroid shots), Naturopathy, Homeopathy, Meditation, Pranic Healing, Reiki, physical therapy, massage therapy (neuro), water therapy, you name it, I've tried it to get rid of the low back pain (due to car accident). It got to the point, where I had to depend on a wheelchair for mobility. Today, I'm walking 14 kms!! No sales gimmick..nothing like that. I have been using a couple of things: Ayurveda is the main one, the other is yoga! Of course meditation is part of yoga - I won't deny that. I found doing pranayam very very useful! As well as different types of asanas per my yoga instructors. Please check with the nearest yoga ashram to you. I personally favor Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram (KYM) http://www.kym.org. They'll even work with you regarding finances.
Please try http://www.aryavaidyasala.com for Kottakkal's Ayurvedic Treatment. I rate it #1! It's very difficult to get a reservation, but if the need is an emergency as it was mine, they'll work with you. Another ayurvedic resource, which I rely on, is http://www.ayurveda.com . This institute was founded by Dr. Vasant Lad, who's an amazing ayurvedic doctor. He travels world-wide giving lectures (along with reputable Dr. Deepak Chopra at times).
As far as "cheap" is concerned, I don't know what you mean. All of the above are reasonable, and each one does work out to your advantage. Kottakkal has a charitable hospital, Dr. Lad accepts money only by donations when he's in Pune every year, KYM accepts money according to your lifestyle.
Just check the above links out. I hope you feel better soon.

I have presonally worked with referrals from my chiropractor where we have observed improved tissue health, reduced inflammation and reduction in pain by applying glycomic technologies. You can learn more on my profile.
The reduction of saturated fat in your diet, and increasing your intake of Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids can also help. This is because the change in balance of these fats has been shown to reduce inflammation...and that will affect pain as well.
