Advertising is a very broad field, competition is fierce, and total employment is shrinking in the US. There are three basic areas of employment -- creative, media placement, and account management.
Creative involves the writing of ads and the technical production of all aspects of ads. This includes graphic design, video, radio, and Internet. For creative jobs it is far more important to have a portfolio of work product than the school one attends.
Media placement involves making the proper placement of ads to get value for the client ad budget. Often people with a talent for sales and negotiation excel is this area. Many universities with have double majors in business and communication or hybrid programs.
For account management the career path often involves a stint in the creative or media side of the business and then an MBA from a top flight school like Northwestern, Duke, Berkley, Michigan, Standford, Colombia
