Yes, but it won't happen anytime soon. While solar panels are a good start and more people going off grid, development of biodiesel, and other alternative fuels, we also need to open up the drilling in this country and put a mandate on it that it can not be sold over seas and it is to be used here in the sates only. Part of the problem with the price of oil is that we buy more than we need. We need to use what we have and not sell it. It is like growing tomatoes and selling all of them and then having to go to the store to go buy some. This needs to be stopped. Also with opec, if they want to screw us around with oil, stop giving them billions of dollars in hand outs every year. Screw them right back.

Certainly, but it will affect other parts of the economy. Vehicles should pay an annual tax (or not) according to weight. If you aren't the owner of a farm or business that needs one, no trucks should be exempted. A small utility trailer is more economical and all that most people need. We make each smoker pay hundreds of tax dollars each year, why not the people who drive pickup trucks? But that won't make a real difference unless you crack down on the refiners at the same time. Pressure them to have enough refining capacity, or take it from them and give it to somebody else. There's no reason someone should stub his toe in the mideast and gas prices here should go up five cents the next day. None at all.

The U.S. has a federal petroleum reserve that can supply the nation with 3 months of gas without any imports. It's meant to be used as an emergency, but has been used in the past for matters like this.
If you feel strongly about it...urge whoever represents your city, or state to use the reserve. If not....pay the prices...we Canadians do...in face there was a fire in a refinery near Toronto a few days back, now half the gas stations dont' even have gas, and prices are HIGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!

In the UK a gallon is now about $9.00 plus we have road tax of about $300 per year, now we have city's that charge congestion charges and yet they are also taking about bringing in a new mileage tax. plus we have top everywhere to park and for parking permits outside our houses
Now i believe that we should all use our vehicles less but it is not easy when everything is always far away from where we live and work etc. Governments should do more to improve to improve public services such as train and buses and to lower prices in fares.
Taxation is not a solution.

Almost every oil rich Arab country pays oil dividends to their citizens.
The same oil barons have so much money they could never possibly spend it all. Yet they b i t c h that they are not getting enough for a barrel of oil. How much money do they need?

Really, there is nothing we can do. If we all start driving little lawnmowers and cut our use in half they would just double the price. I think the real issue is for so many years (thanks to Ronald Reagan) we had cheap gas. Go back as far as you want and check what people were making compared to the price of gas. By this relation we still have cheap gas.

Your not going to. It's just going to keep going up. In fact I'm waiting for the government to put a big tax on it. After all the general public is proving to them that they have the money to waste. What kind of message do you think they see when people spend $50,000 on a SUV or pickup that lucky if it gets 15mpg. And they don't help that gas mileage any when they drive 80 to90 mph everywhere.

Quit buying gas guzzling autos, suvs, and pickup trucks. The more gas consumption, the higher the demand for gas, and the higher the prices.

Force people into paying huge taxes on larger tax guzzling vehicles.Make were you only allowed a gas tag. Like they did in the early '70's. Tag ended in a certain number you were only allowed to buy gas on certain days. Or just explore more....supply and demand is the best reason for gas prices.
That and greedy OPEC-KERS

Buy motorcycles and learn to ride them. My sportbike gets about 45mpg, and I like to go fast. Stop buying Hummers, F350s, Suburbans, Yukons, and Escalades.
Or just impeach Bush and get rid of his oil-whoring agends.
