The Fab Five of Michigan (Chris Webber, Juwan Howard, Jalen Rose, Ray Jackson, Jimmy King) stood out not only because of their outstanding talent as freshman but also due to their noticeably longer baggy gold shorts. A lot of people complained that they played and looked like street kids. Their flair became quite popular with adolescents and so did their shorts. So that was in 1990 and 1991.

Like the other person said it is typically thought of that the Fab 5 started the baggy shorts trend and it has become normal now. It is essentially just a fashion trend as neither long nor short shorts help or hurt your ability to play.

A popular misconception is that the Michigan Wolverines started the trend, but in reality it was the Arkansas Razorbacks who broke the mold and took the shorts where they are today. Michigan simply added an inch or two to the length

Lot's of people credit it to michigan or some of the pro players at the time. But one of the real reasons was that fashion changed. If ya think about it, if the nba hadn't stepped in with this new dress code, everyone would be wearing "underarmor".

It changed because MJ used his North Carolina shorts below his Chicago Bulls shorts as a superstition
So he started using his shorts down the knees so they wouldnt see that bad.

Michael Jordan started it in his rookie year. He had worn the support tights under his shorts at UNC, and when he got to the Bulls he wanted to wear his UNC shorts under his Bulls shorts as well as wearing the support tights. The Bulls had him wear oversized shorts and the craze was started.
