Like the others have said, the schools that generally have school uniforms are private. Fitting under that category, almost all Catholic schools have some kind of uniform.
Public schools rarely have school uniforms, although it is a fairly common topic for debate. However, some inner-city schools do have school uniforms: they are used to increase discipline and seem to occur mostly in schools where gangs are a problem.
Instead of school uniforms, what most schools do have is a dress code. They're not particularly strict: you can't wear very revealing clothing or have inappropriate (alchol/drugs/violence) writing on your t-shirts.

I'm sorry to disappoint you, but it's true (at least in American public schools). I attended a parochial school from kindergarten until eighth grade and we had to wear uniforms. The public elementary and junior-high school students didn't have to wear uniforms (although they weren't allowed to wear "inappropriate" clothing.
After eighth grade, I attended a public high school and it was quite an adjustment (although almost all the guys wore blue jeans). It seems that they were part of a de-facto "uniform". Any boy not wearing jeans looked out of place.
Several years ago, my parents told me that they thought that uniforms were a great idea. They eliminated the competition to see who could dress in the most expensive clothes, thereby showing off to the school that their parents had a lot of money and giving them a feeling of 'superiority'.
Now, looking back, I agree with them.

Most schools in our country don't require school uniforms. ALL schools in our country require students to follow a dress code. Many schools are seeing the benefits of school uniforms and are enforcing the policy. As a teacher, I definitely think it would help break down barriers between the upper and lower class. However, I've never attended or worked in a school where uniforms were in place. Even though you said you don't think it's fair, is it easy to tell who has money and who doesn't at your school?

It is good or bad depending on how you look at it.
Yes, In America, Public schools don't need to wear uniform.
The good thing about is that freedom, kids can wear almost aything that want. The bad thing is that you let's say one kid does something bad. No one will know what school does that kid belong to.
In term of variety, kids with uniform will have to wear it 5 days a week. Yes, it is kind of boring. But in other sense, it shows discipline.

Many private schools do, but very few public schools do. I know I didn't have to, nor did any of the public schools in my area.
