Now, I have to qualify the following story by saying that my wife and I are both well educated, professional people who have completed grad school and enjoy quite productive professional lives. We are also both devout Christians and believers in God. We do not believe in ghosts, which in my opinion, makes the story I’m about to tell that much more disturbing.

My wife and I recently purchased an old pre-civil war antebellum home on five acres in rural Western Missouri. After purchasing the home, we did some research and found that the house was built in the 1840’s as part of a much larger plantation. The owner, at that time, was an abolitionist who did not favor the secessionist movement in Missouri during the war. According to local historians, although they lived in Missouri, he and his family eventually became the victims of Quantrill's Raiders.

Now I had to tell you that story so that I could tell you this story. A few weeks ago, my wife and I were at home watching television one evening when our two Rottweilers suddenly became very agitated for no apparent reason. By this, I mean they jumped up at the same time and began growling with their hackles up. Although both are very large dogs, they are normally very docile and obedient dogs that seldom become agitated at anything. So, my wife and I both looked around the house suspicious that someone might be outside attempting to break into the house or vandalizing something outside. Finding nothing, we told the dogs to calm down and went back to watching television.

Now keep in mind that this is an old house, so my wife and I have become accustomed to squeaky floors and that sort of thing, which makes this next part all the more alarming. About an hour after the first incident with the dogs, both my wife and I distinctly heard what sounded like footsteps coming from the upstairs hallway. The two dogs went nuts and fearing that a burglar was now in the house, I grabbed my shotgun. But, when I headed for the stairwell the two dogs, who ordinarily would have lead the charge up the stairs, instead blocked my path and wouldn’t allow me to go upstairs. Both of them continued to growl and show their teeth as they looked up the stairwell, but would not let me get past them. Finally, I managed to get to the bottom of the stairwell and flip the light switch on, at which point the footsteps in the upstairs hallway came to an abrupt stop.

My wife and I both looked at each other in amazement as the two dogs charged up the stairs to “patrol” the upper floor of the house. I personally checked every room of the house including the attic. I found all the windows locked and everything just as we had left it and needless to say, no intruder either.

I don't know what to make of the whole incident...

I used to wonder but now I know they are real.

A guy I worked with brought some photos he took at a house burning in Virginia. His family owned a farm there and it was a place his family went hunting. So they had a old house there that was falling in and they decided to burn it to keep from someone entering the house and falling through the floor. While this was going on my friend was going around the house with a pretty normal Kodak camera...film camera taking pictures. The film went to a drug store and when it came back one of the photos showed a ghost. This wasn't any normal ghost. This was a woman standing in her Sunday dress on the front porch surrounded by flames.

This man that had the photo is probably Mr. Goody Two Shoes if anyone truly is. He is a perfectly straight laced fundamentalist Christian if there ever was one. I doubt he ever misses church so I don't think there is anyway this photo was tampered with. He said it was his great grandmother. This was not a smoky apparition, she was visible, the dress was visible and this sort of sealed it for me that there has to be a dimension beyond the one we live in.

In Nashville one night after clubbing i spent the night at a woman's house her name was Deborah. I happened to wake up just before dawn and she was still asleep next to me so i spent a few minutes watching her sleep and turned to look at the clock it was about 5am and the sun was coming up.

I happened to look to the foot of the bed and saw a woman staring at me with red hair and a dark green sundress . I thought maybe Deborah had a roommate or it was her daughter or something (Deborah was 45) but it dawned on me that this woman who seemed to be in her early twenties at most had the saddest look in her eyes and as i moved my hand to wake Deborah the red haired woman just faded away like a mist but pretty quickly.

I went back to sleep because even though it was a very strange experience i didn't feel threatened by it and i actually felt kind of sorry for whoever the mystery woman was. Several hours later Deborah and i went out to eat and we ran out of stuff to talk about and i just flat out told her "You know i think your house is haunted." She looked at me and her eyes got as big as saucers and i thought "oh great now she thinks i'm insane." but she just said "You are the first person who has been to visit me who mentioned that first. I tell people all the time but no one believes me." She asked how i knew and i told her what i saw. She said she had instances of getting up and taking a shower and when she got back to the bedroom drawers would be opened and so forth. She told me about things coming up missing and the usual electronics turning on and off.

We did eventually stop seeing each other but years later when my daughter was born i noticed weird stuff happening in her bedroom like a Winnie The Pooh lamp fly across the room and crucifixes (my baby's momma is Catholic) being taken down and hidden under beds and so forth. I would also see shadows of people when there was no one in the house and when she was about 6 my little girl asked her grandfather who the man was helping him make Tamales and he told he was the only man in the house. He said when my daughter asked "Well who is the guy next to you?" that spooked him really bad. Later on he showed her some photos and when my Daughter saw a picture of her greatgrandfather from her grandmother's side (who she never met) she told him that was the guy who was standing next to him when he was making tamales. He was also known to be a devout Catholic who didn't like crucifixes because he "didn't like to see Jesus' suffering."

There are two main types of hauntings interactive and residual. Residual is when you see a ghost do what they did in life and they don't acknowledge you and the other is when you can interact with them. Remember for the believer no proof is neccessary and for the skeptic no proof is possible.

Perhaps only real in the sense we have spoiritual memories of people. I have several departed people who seem to be with me (almost physically) in times of stress, or near they time of their passing or birthday. Is it because I miss them, and so in sprit they visit. I think so. If y ou are aware of some around you, enjoy their presense and believe you are blessed. My deceased grandson, age 23, has been hovering around for several days now. It's very pleasant.

Strange, how children and pets seem to see things that grownups don't see. When my granddaughter was about 3 1/2, she kept looking at the hallway and asked me who that man was. I couldn't see anyone but it got weird for awhile.
